5th September 2006

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a good summer break and got a chance to relax. All the staff are keen to get your children working again!

I would like to welcome Mrs Sellwood to Upshire, who will be teaching Year 1/2; also welcome to all the new children (and parents). We have children starting in the Reception class as well as others throughout the school. We all hope they will be happy here.

It was lovely to see everybody wearing the school uniform today. May I remind you that all children should wear black shorts and white tee shirts for P.E. They do look so smart when they are all wearing the same colours. Please do not let your children wear jewellery to school. If your child has pierced ears then we do allow them to wear studs or sleepers but these must be removed by the child before P.E. or covered in tape. This is for the safety of your child. Teachers and learning support assistants (LSAs) will not touch earrings. Necklaces and rings are also not allowed. If a child comes to school wearing them, they will be asked to take them off. The jewellery will be put into an envelope and taken home at the end of the day. Older children are allowed to wear watches as this helps in maths.

As you know the Parents Association organise some excellent events for children, parents and families throughout the year. They raise lots of money that goes towards purchasing extra resources for the children. Each year we need new parents with new ideas to replace those who have left. If you could spare a few hours a month to attend meetings and events, then I am sure this vital part of the school will continue to flourish. If you would like more information please see Pat in the office.

As most of you know we are now a Healthy School and we encourage you to give your child a piece of fruit for the morning break. All Key Stage One children are offered a free piece of fruit or vegetable everyday.

May I remind you that Upshire has a no smoking policy. To the smokers amongst you, please will you not smoke whilst on the school premises, in or out of the building. Also please do not bring your dog onto the school grounds. If you do walk a dog to school, please leave it tied up outside.

The staff car park is for staff and deliveries. As a Healthy School we would encourage you to walk to school. However, if you do have to drive please park your car in a safe place on the road or opposite Woodgreen Road.

Please will you contact the school if your child is ill, as we need to know as soon as possible.

Our cake sales will restart again next Tuesday. Thanks to those of you who either make or bring in cakes. Each one is sold for 20p. The money will go to a charity chosen by the School Council, presently the NSPCC.

Finally, if your child is experiencing problems please arrange to see the class teacher sooner rather than later. We hope we are an approachable staff and we appreciate dialogue. I have an open door policy and will try to see you at the earliest convenient time.

We have a very strong staff at Upshire and when you support us I am confident that your child will have a successful and happy year with us.
